Each month, the Microbiology Society publishes the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, which details newly discovered species of bacteria, fungi and protists. New to Science is a monthly blog series unravelling these latest microbial discoveries.

We are delighted to share a metrics update from across our portfolio, which showcases a range of measures of engagement with each title in the last year (for those that have been publishing for over a year).

Dr Claire Oastler at the Animal and Plant Health Agency, UK, takes us behind the scenes of their latest publication, 'Biofilm-forming capability of Salmonella isolates sourced from poultry production and farm environments in Great Britain', published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology.

We are looking to appoint Editors to play a vital role in Access Microbiology, ensuring the publication of high-quality research and fostering engagement within the Microbiology community.

Each month, the Microbiology Society publishes the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, which details newly discovered species of bacteria, fungi and protists. Here are some of the new species that have been discovered and the places they've been found.  

Let’s dive straight into the exciting discoveries published this month in the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, including the rarely seen inclusion of three new fungi!

Methanobacterium nebraskense is also the first published archaeal microbe isolated from the Eastern Saline Wetlands, a nationally unique and endangered ecosystem located in and around Lincoln created by the upwelling of saline groundwater.

Orthohantaviruses, such as the Puumala virus, is widespread in Europe, causing flu-like illnesses and severe kidney damage in those infected. It is increasingly considered a zoonotic threat. Researchers from the Medical Faculty of the University of Duisburg-Essen and the University Hospital Essen, Germany, have gained new insights into how these viruses alter the internal structure of their host cells. Their findings were published on 12 February, in the Journal of General Virology.

Cryptococcus neoformans, a pathogen fungi responsible for 112,000 deaths in 2020, is increasingly found in patients alongside the bacterial pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In the paper, published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology, researchers identify for the first time that interaction between the two microorganisms contributes towards worsened disease outcomes in those co-infected.

The Microbiology Society’s Microbiology Outlooks, launched in 2025, has published its inaugural article: “When Theory Meets Genomics: Reconciling Game Dynamics and Within-Host Evolution”. The new commentary explores how theoretical models and genomic data can be integrated to understand within-host evolution.  

Thanks to the support of subscribing institutions, the Microbiology Society is pleased to confirm that we have again met our sustainability target for the Journal of General Virology  and the Journal of Medical Microbiology  under the Subscribe to Open (S2O) model for 2026. All content published in these titles in the next year will be published as permanently Open Access (OA). 

The Journal of General Virology (JGV) has appointed Professor Rachel Fearns as Editor-in-Chief from 1 January 2026.

The challenges facing society are multidisciplinary and evolving in nature. Powerful new tools are emerging in fields such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning that can provide insights into large datasets that the human eye misses. There is also an opportunity to improve technologies based on imaging and sequence analysis to capture novel data. At the Microbiology Society, we recognise that microbiology offers powerful insight for addressing these future opportunities, and we are delighted to announce a new multidisciplinary journal joining our popular and successful portfolio: Microbiology Horizons.

The Journal of Medical Microbiology is an interdisciplinary journal for medical, dental and veterinary microbiology, at the bench and in the clinic. It provides comprehensive coverage of medical, dental and veterinary microbiology and infectious diseases, welcoming articles ranging from laboratory research to clinical profiles, including bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology.

Researchers from the University of Queensland reveal the relationship between levels of stress hormones and increased susceptibility to secondary infection in koalas with koala retrovirus (KoRV), an often fatal disease contributing towards their declining populations, in a new paper published in the Journal of General Virology.

Access Microbiology is an open research platform. It supports the publication of replication studies, negative or null results, research proposals, data management plans, additions to established methods, case reports, software development, educational and outreach methods, and interdisciplinary work. We welcome work from the full spectrum of microscopic life forms, from bacteria and viruses to fungi, protists, archaea, and algae.

Journal of General Virology has been publishing peer-reviewed research for more than 50 years. We recognise the importance of virology as a unique discipline within microbiology, and actively collaborates with partners such as the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) to support the global virology community.

• The first systematic review on the effects of bipolar medications on the gut microbiome furthers our understanding of the connection between the gut and the brain in patients treated for bipolar disorder. 
• By analysing existing datasets, researchers concluded that the health of the gut microbiome may predict a patient’s response to treatment with drugs. 
• The results of the study could pave the way for new personalised therapeutic strategies and inspire further studies and clinical trials focused on treatments with the microbiome in mind.
