Overview

The ASE is a dynamic community of teachers, technicians, and other professionals supporting science education in the UK. Each year the Society for General Microbiology showcases its educational resources in the exhibition throughout this educators’ conference. Under the banner of Biology in the Real World* the Society offered a trouble-shooting practical microbiology session and a speaker who spoke about contemporary microbiology as part of this series.

The speaker for 2012 was Professor Mike Gleeson (Loughborough University), who gave his talk ‘Fighting Fit: how exercise affects your immunity and susceptibility to infection’, on 6 January at 11.30am in the ULR Building, Lecture Theatre C.

Recordings of previous Biology in the Real World Talks are kept by Royal Society of Biology.

ASE 2012 saw the launch of our new resource Algae: A practical resource for secondary schools. The launch event was held after the Biology in the Real World session at 16.30 in the foyer outside Lecture Theatre C.

A practical session was delivered by Dr John Schollar on Thursday 5 January (12.00-17.00) Lab TL4, Chemistry building. John will be trouble-shooting problematic microbiology demonstrations.

*Biology in the Real World is a series of events coordinated by the NUCLEUS of learned societies and similar not-for-profit organisations.
