Membership FAQs

Can I join online?

You can join online paying either by credit/debit card, or direct debit if you hold a bank account in the United Kingdom. Please note we do not accept American Express.

Grades of membership and online application form

Full Member

For those with an academic or professional interest in microbiology.

Full Concessionary Member

For those with an academic or professional interest in microbiology earning less than £35,000 (or equivalent) per year.

Postgraduate Student Member

For those registered for a higher degree.

Undergraduate Student Member

For those studying at undergraduate level.

Affiliate Membership

For anyone with an interest in microbiology who simply wants to stay in touch.

How do I access my online account?

Login to Mi Society using the email address and password that you created when you registered to use online services.

What if I can't find my login details?

Please do not register/create another online account via web registration as you will not be able to access any of your membership history, including grant applications and event registration.

If you are not sure which email address you used when you created your online account, please contact the Membership Team by email at [email protected].

You can reset your password by clicking on the 'Forgotten Password' button on the login page. If you don’t receive a password reset email, please check your junk mail before contacting the Membership Team.

My membership details need updating, how can I do this?

You can update these details by logging in to Mi Society. Alternatively, you can contact the Membership Team and we will update your details for you.

I would like to renew my membership using a different method of payment

If you would like to change your method of payment, please contact the Membership Team and we will amend your records.

I would like to change my membership grade; can I do this online?

Your membership grade cannot currently be changed online. If you would like to change your membership grade please contact the Membership Team and we will amend your records for you.

I have retired, do I need to change my grade of membership?

We do not have a grade of membership for people retiring from their jobs, but usually recommend one of the following grades:

Full Concessionary Membership is available to those with an academic or professional interest in microbiology earning less than £35,000 per year. This grade allows access to membership benefits such as the ability to apply for Society grants.

Affiliate Membership is for anyone with an interest in microbiology who simply wants to stay in touch.

If you wish to change to one of these grades, or further discuss these options, please contact the Membership Team and we will amend your records for you.

My membership has lapsed.How can I reinstate my membership?

You can join the Society again by logging in to your online account and navigating to Membership/Join the Society. Alternatively, you can contact the Membership Team and we will reinstate your membership for you. Please note: if there is a significant gap in your membership you may no longer be eligible for certain grants with a minimum membership period.

Can I apply for a grant?

A full list of grants, their eligibility criteria and deadline dates for applying can be found on the Grants section of our website. If you have specific questions about grant applications, please contact the Grants Office.

How can I get involved and make the most of my membership?

The Microbiology Society provides many opportunities, tools and information to aid personal and professional development. Log in to Mi Society to access all the available resources and create a profile on our Members’ Directory to connect with other members with similar interests.
